Best Kid and Teen Haircuts in Mandeville — What Parents Should Know Before You Visit

Blog No. 6

Finding the right place for your child’s haircut can feel like a gamble. Will they love it? Will you love it? Are we at the stage where they care more about what their friends think than what you do? It can feel like a gauntlet.

The good news? A haircut doesn’t have to be a battle. With the right barber and a little humor, it can actually be fun (yes, even for the picky ones).

Here’s what every parent should know before booking a kids or teen haircut in Mandeville, from finding the perfect style to building their confidence in and out of the chair.

The Great Haircut Compromise: What Kids Want vs. What Parents Want

I have found that the real secret to a great haircut experience is finding the middle ground between what your child wants and what you, the parent, want.

Most kids are all about the bangs or fringe — or whatever they want to call the hair that covers their foreheads. Meanwhile parents are usually focused on the practical stuff. “Please clean up around the ears and neck so they don’t look like they’ve been lost out in the bayou for a month.”

The good news is, you can have both. Whether it’s a big kid haircut or the latest trending haircut they found on TikTok, I work with both kids and parents to make sure everyone leaves happy. Confident kids, relieved parents, and no awkward mirror moments later.

Mandeville’s Most Popular Boys’ Haircut Styles

Not sure where to start? These are the go-to looks I see time and time again as a Mandeville barber

- The Buzz Cut: Simple, clean, timeless. Zero morning battles with bedhead and zero time spent styling. It’s actually my own son's preferred haircut.

- The Classic Taper (aka Textured Top with Short Sides): Easily customizable with short sides blended into just the right amount of length on top. The top can be textured or left alone for a perfect “gentleman’s” side part.

- The Fluffy Top / The Llama / Broccoli Hair: Whatever you call it… you know what I’m talking about! Heavily textured on top, long enough to hide their eyes or at least their forehead, usually with a low fade on the sides. Especially popular with the middle school and junior high crowd.

- The Modern Mullet: Calling all baseball lovers! Short on the sides, longer in the back, and full of personality. Add a burst fade, a curved fade that wraps around the ear, for an edgy, polished style boys love. Keep in mind, this is considered a “complex haircut,” so book accordingly.

- The Fade: Low, mid, or high, faded down to skin. This sharp, modern style is basically a classic look these days.

- The Surfer Shag or Ice Cream Scoop: A longer, messy style with natural layers that gives off those carefree, beachy vibes. Boys love how it flips out from under their baseball caps. It’s a cool, low-maintenance look with just the right amount of attitude.

Still unsure? No stress. I’ll help you choose a look that fits your child’s hair texture, their style, and both of your preferences.

Helping Kids Learn to Care for Their Hair

A great haircut is just the beginning. Once your child or teen leaves the chair, I want them to know how to keep their style looking good at home too.

That’s why I always take the time to teach kids and teens the basics of proper hair care. From how to wash their hair to avoid flakes and buildup (since Mom or Dad can’t do it for them anymore) to the best way to towel dry or style it without causing damage. We also talk about easy product options that work for their style, whether they want to add texture, keep things neat, or tame cowlicks.

It’s all about building confidence for life — not just in how they look, but in how they take care of themselves.

Burned by Bad Haircuts? I See You

If your child or teen has been traumatized by a bad haircut in the past, trust me, you’re not alone. I can’t tell you how many nervous kids (and grown ups) have sat in my chair after a haircut gone wrong, wondering if it’s fixable.

Spoiler: It almost always is.

I’m known for walking kids and teens through every step of the process, from how much will be cut to exactly where, before a single hair hits the floor. We talk, I show them, they approve. No surprises, no pressure, no meltdowns.

And if you’re searching for someone who’s great at fixing bad haircuts or helping teens recover from a style gone wrong, you’ve found them. Helping my clients, especially my younger ones, feel good about their hair again is one of my favorite parts of the job.

How to Prepare for a Stress-Free Haircut

A little prep goes a long way when it comes to keeping the haircut experience smooth:

- Talk It Up: For younger kids, explain what to expect, like the buzzing clippers, the water spray, and that it’s totally okay to ask questions.

- Pack a Distraction: A book, a tablet, or their favorite toy can be a lifesaver.

- Involve Them: Show younger ones pictures of styles they might like. Older kids and teens will probably be showing you those pictures.

- Timing is Everything: Hungry or tired? Not ideal. Aim for post-snack, well-rested appointment times (and yes, that goes for the teens too!).

Finding someone patient, experienced, and ready to roll with whatever mood walks through the door makes all the difference. For little ones under five, I always suggest Kid’s Hair, Etc. here in Mandeville. But once your child hits that five-and-up mark and is ready for a more grown-up haircut experience, that’s where I come in.

BONUS! FAQ for Kid and Teen Haircuts

What is the best age for a child’s first haircut in Mandeville?

Most children are ready for their first haircut between 12 and 24 months, but it really depends on their hair growth. Most parents bring little ones in once the hair starts getting in their eyes, around the ears, or looks uneven.

When should I bring my child in for regular trims?

It depends on hair growth and style. For fine or fast-growing hair, trims every 4–6 weeks help avoid split ends and tangles. Longer styles or curly hair may only need a cut every 3–6 months unless frequent shaping is needed.

Do you offer haircuts for teens with curly hair?

Absolutely! I love working with curly hair. I focus on stylish, manageable cuts that work with their natural texture whether they want to keep their curls defined or go for a more tapered, clean look. I will also spend some time on curly hair maintenance.

Are perms safe for teens and kids?

Perms use strong chemicals that may cause scalp irritation or permanent damage so be cautious. Most stylists suggest waiting until after puberty, or opting for non-chemical styling methods first. Alternatives like braids or rollers can mimic the look without chemicals. If you’re child would like a perm I can make some recommendations for stylists in the Mandeville area.

What’s the best way to prep a child with sensory sensitivity for a haircut?

Don't hesitate to ask if you can visit the barbershop beforehand and let your child sit in the chair, touch the tools, hear the sounds. Bring sensory-safe items or toys or weighted blankets, and, if possible, schedule during quieter times.

I also recommend finding a book or cartoon on kids getting a haircut, many tv shows like Daniel Tigers Neighborhood and Bluey have episodes on this subject. Watching or reading these every day leading up to the appointment can have a very positive impact.

How can I make a haircut a great experience?

Show enthusiasm beforehand, bring toys or snacks, pick off-peak hours between meals/naps, and offer social rewards (like extra parent attention) instead of just treats or go ahead and bring all the treats. The more options the better.

What’s the difference between kids’ and adult haircuts?

Kid’s hair is often more difficult as it’s a tinier canvas to work with and they tend to wiggle… a lot. Also young kids' hair tends to be finer and more sensitive. Barbershops and salons that specialize in cutting kids often are designed to distract the kids while the stylist works quickly to accomplish the haircut. I recommend Kid’s Hair, Etc. for kids 4 years old and younger. I only take clients 5 years old and up.
